Filling out an amicable report form

The amicable accident form is both a simple and effective method, of crucial importance. This document allows you to report the car accident and record all relevant information such as:

  • The names and addresses of the drivers
  • Their driver's license numbers
  • Their registration numbers
  • Their insurance details

Details of the accident will also be recorded, thereby enabling your insurer to determine your level of responsibility for calculating the compensation you may be entitled to.

Notify emergency services in case of injuries

If no one is injured, there's no need to contact the police. However, if the collision has caused injuries, even minor ones, to one or more individuals, emergency services must be notified, and the police will prepare an accident report to be sent to the Quebec Automobile Insurance Corporation (SAAQ).

Did you hit an animal? You must report it to the authorities under certain conditions, whether it's a domestic or wild animal. You are required to report any animal weighing more than 25 kg to the nearest police station, otherwise, you risk a fine of $300 and 9 demerit points.

However, if you hit a wild turkey, a bird of prey, a moose, a deer, or a coyote, among others, regardless of their weight, you must contact a wildlife protection officer, as these animals are on the list of species that must be reported.

Contact your insurance company

It's crucial to contact your insurance company as soon as possible after your car accident; whether or not you plan to file a claim, you must notify them and explain the circumstances of the accident.

Then, your insurer will inspect the vehicle and the damage, should you decide to file a claim. Note that you must get your insurer's permission before having your vehicle repaired.
